The Maxwell Street Klezmer Band
Named for Chicago's Sunday market, Maxwell Street Klezmer Band embodies the colorful spirit of immigrant America. The band has played at Carnegie Hall and has toured Europe, but is equally at home providing authentic music at weddings. Founded in 1983 by Lori Lippitz, Maxwell Street marked its 30th “Bandiversary” in 2013 at The Old Town School of Folk Music in Chicago with two sold out performances and is returning in 2016 to do a holiday concert with Rabbi Joe Black. Musical Director and violinist Alex Koffman was recently soloist with the Chicago Sinfonietta in a classical klezmer composition created for him (“Klezmer Rhapsody”), and the band was featured in 2014 with The Lyric Opera of Chicago in a modern klezmer opera called “The Property.” Their new multimedia educational entertainment performance, “The Whole Megillah: The Story of the Yiddish Theater,” is currently touring the country.
“These are fine musicians…they care about the music. And when they care—I care.”
-Theodore Bikel, Actor and Singer
